art buyers are people too

let's hear it for the unsung heroes of the agency world
Did you all see the Tierney Gearon’s amazing story in NYT’s Hollywood Issue this weekend?  It’s called Hollywood Heroines  and well, it rocks.  Tierney is known for her very intimate and personal portraits.  She has quite a prolific fine art career and the NYT selected her to shoot 12 actresses.  She also made 12 mini movies that are meant to be dreams…we are headed to see the uncut versions of these this evening.  Good stuff!
Tierney has been with Trish South for quite a long time.  Trish has a great roster and despite Tierney being known for her fine art imagery, she also has shot commercially for Kate Spade, HP, Coca Cola, and many others.  Let’s not forget that ad work is a great way to fund those fine art projects and much needed holidays!
We also follow Tierny on Instagram and she was getting mad shout outs from some of our favorite females photographers including Cass Bird and Pam Hanson once she began posting her NYT images this weekend.

The Art Buyers

How much are we loving this image that we found on Colossal today?  Check out the video as well.  Very cool and a little unnerving at the same time.
It’s reminiscent of Peter Funch’s Babel Tales series, but with planes.  It makes one stop and think about how we are traveling, where we are traveling, the fuel used to travel…still it is an extraordinary image.  The fact that it was taken on Black Friday…well, that’s just another story entirely…

Happy Birthday, Gordon Parks!

This is a wonderful article on NYT today, on what would have been Mr. Park’s 100th birthday.  His imagery is beautiful.  He was able to capture women and fashion in his own way.

We particularly loved the advice that his father gave him:

“Your heart will tell your feet which roads to take,” his father counseled. “There’ll be signposts along the way giving out directions. You’ll have the right to question them, but don’t ignore them. Each one is meant for something.”

If you are looking for something to do tonight head over to Henry Leutwyler’s opening and book release.  The book is a stunning observation and collection of the New York City Ballet.  It takes you behind the curtain and on a beautiful journey full of tutus, tattered shoes, and sweaty practice sessions.

The story behind the book is that Henry was asked to shoot the NYCB’s ad campaign and saw so much more.  He saw the sewing machines whirring and the lockers stacked with a single dancer’s shoes…all of the things that make seeing the ballet so special that we might have never known about.  The images capture all of this with such beauty and thoughtfulness.

The stills will take your breath aways and the views from the wings will give you butterflies in your stomach.

We all received Dwight Eschliman’s new promo today.  We loved it and it immediately went up on walls.  The cards are beautifully packaged and printed.  It is well done and definitely stood out in the mail today.
Dwight’s work is so clean and consistent.  It can sometimes have a clinical feel due to how he organizes his props.  Clinical sounds bad, but this is oh, so good!  He has such a recognizable style and it carries over into his landscapes, portraits and personal work.  He seems to just see the world in a very specific way and we are so lucky that he shares with us through his imagery.  Very cool.
He has done some incredible projects in the past and we are just in love with the Teva campaign.  He included a few of the shots in this recent promo.
You can check out more of his work at Apostrophe.

It’s always great to to learn about an agency that we haven’t ever heard of. It’s also fun to learn about it through a co-worker who’s adorable little one goes to the same daycare as one of the photographer’s kids.   That’s what happened today.  A co-worker sent us to McDermott Management.

They are LA based  group with 10 photographers and 3 illustrators.  They have some very cool stuff for sure.  But there are some problems. Their website is a little difficult to navigate and needs a good edit.  There is just so much to look at…too much!  Why do all of the thumbnails load and then when one is clicked on 20 more have to load?!?  This is crazy.  We’ve seen personal sites operate this way and that’s okay, not great, but fine, we can deal with that.  When we are quickly going through sites to pull photographers to present it should be a breeze.

A good agency site has a nice variety, but also keeps it quick and consistent.  It can be a scroll of images or even a grid…but not 10,000 thumbnails and 4 categories for each artists.  McDermott has links to the artists’ personal sites as well, but after scrolling through a million thumbnails our eyes needed a break and well, we gave up.

We still are into the work here.  It’s got that very hipster look and somewhere in there we are sure that there is something we could sell.

Loved this little piece in NYT’s style section about W and their contest for up and coming fashion photographers called “The Shot.”  So nice that the big editorial fancies are recognizing and trying to promote the amazing young talent out there.  W, that’s pretty cool of you.  We will definitely renew our subscription!
Obviously we have a thing for print and it’s important to support it every step of the way to make sure that it’s still around years from now.  We’ve seen it change so much in the past 10+ years and we know that it went through so many other changes prior to our public affair.
It is things like this that make us smile and keep going.  The young need a shot too!
